“Diamonds” is the first single off the forthcoming debut album by Jack and Eliza, a pop duo comprised of Eliza Callahan and Jack Staffen. The track was produced by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear, and it would be easy to attribute its polish to the help of an industry veteran. But the song’s musical finesse comes largely from the band as well; the track’s languid guitar melodies and slightly fuzzed-out sound don’t mask the technical expertise that’s present in Jack and Eliza’s music. On this track, as well on their No Wonders EP, the two singers’ harmonized vocals take center stage over their backing guitars, constantly intertwining and splitting apart. These harmonies, both adroitly written and beautifully sung, allow the track to seem stripped-down and sparse, its arrangements concise and economical, without feeling empty. “Diamonds” may be a more melancholy song than much of the group’s earlier work, but the its chiming accents and warm timbre tie in well with the West Coast atmosphere found in the rest of Jack and Eliza’s repertoire.
Jack and Eliza’s debut LP Gentle Warnings is slated for release on June 9th. Listen to more of Jack and Eliza's music at their Soundcloud.
