There's something to be said about the music we liked during our painfully pubescent teenage years. Simple guitar attacks that back sappy lyrics about an ambiguous crush helped us through the time when we were all trying to find our identities. But with time, our identities begin to solidify, and we begin to gravitate toward a more "mature" musical palette. More complicated chord progressions and deeper lyrics begin to outweigh the simpler anthems of old. As we approach adulthood, we struggle most to grow into our final forms and establish permanent identities. But in limbo, representive of these deeply formative early-twenties, exists Terror Pigeon. Terror Pigeon and their 2014 album, "LIVE IT UP BEFORE YOU DIE IT UP!" reminds me that there is brilliance in simplicity and power in youth culture.
Combining dance-y, electronic elements with an awareness of the more traditional rock band formula, LIVE IT UP expertly executes a sound that is so widely sought after. And lyrics like “I know I get a crush on every girl I meet,” adeptly complement the driving music. These lyrics achieve the perfect level of sappy and romantic, that reminds us of foregone crushes without being vapid and immature, of a time before we became jaded by that shitty girlfriend or that abusive boyfriend—when love was simple. In the opening track, a two-line hook is vamped for the latter two out of three minutes:
I love you. I love you.
This world is 1000 times better, 'cause your mom and your dad fucked each other!
Doesn’t get much simpler than that.
And later in the album, LIVE IT UP moves to address universal qualms, such as self-doubt and fear of failure. “Forget Everything That Makes You Want to Not Be In This Band” is a cathartic track in which frontman/lyricist Neil Fridd lays out his anxieties about life as a traveling musician, lost band members, and reconciling his dreams for the band with reality. The emotional release is punctuated by the triumphantly repeated lyric, “This world was made for kids like us.” This celebration of youth culture is a deeply definitive characteristic of Terror Pigeon.
LIVE IT UP BEFORE YOU DIE IT UP! is a relief from the stresses of adulthood and represents childlike enthusiasm and frivolous romance, yet displays the commanding musical sensibility of a truly innovative band.
