Certain moods call for certain sounds. When I'm cheerful I run to 50's doo-wop classics; a melancholic mood leads me to Modern Vampires of the City. SALES, an Orlando based duo, is unique in that they offer a variety of songs for any mood I'm in. They have a quality which transposes the mood of their song into the new mood you’re feeling. A frown easily turns into a smile when hearing “Chinese New Year” for the first time.
SALES was started by Lauren Morgan and Jordan Shih, long-time friends who decided to start a project based on simple guitar riffs, eloquent vocals, and unique samples. Everything about SALES is straightforward and catchy, and it seems every track they make is golden. Morgan’s vocals set the tone of each song, either as a dreary croon or a lively sing-song, with Shih’s riffs allowing for the improvisation of tone and feeling. The mixture of the two on their debut EP, self-released near the end of 2014, is magic.
Immediately following the release of their EP, SALES garnered some early support, including being named “Ones to Watch” by HypeMachine. Fellow Orlando resident and contemporary XXYYXX remixed one of their songs “Toto,” which further increased their popularity and critical acclaim. SALES has yet to release a full LP, but seeing as how they packed everything from brooding to pure ecstasy on a 6 track EP, I cannot wait to see what they release next.
